As you folks know, we’ve had a huge number of break-ins in our neighborhood over the holidays. I was recently sitting at my computer about 2 o’clock in the afternoon. (Most of the break-ins have occurred during the afternoon hours). Out of the corner of my eye I see a guy in a baseball cap and a dark jacket walk around the corner of the house. Both dogs start raising a lot of ruckus, so I am taking their signal seriously. I have front door opened with the screen door locked (for what little good that would be).

Our female German Shepherd is at the front door so I head out the backdoor with Wolfgang in full alert. We stand in the driveway; I look around and see no cars in sight. I am now taking the situation as a real home invasion situation. I yell HELLO! very loudly about 5 times with no response. I then give Wolfgang his word to handle the situation. He scans around for a very brief second, locks onto a position and heads out at full speed.

About that time, from around the corner comes one of the city water works folks. I yell DOWN! to Wolfgang and he hits the ground about 3 feet from the guy. Needless to say the guy stopped dead in his tracks and was white as a sheet.

I won’t tell you what I said to the guy, but he was apologizing very quickly for not announcing his presence. He said he heard me calling HELLO!, but figured he would just talk to me when he got back up close to the house! I told him to stand still, keep his hands down wand walk the other way AWAY from me. So, instead of following instructions he starts walking right toward me! Wolfgang held his down while I re-commanded the guy to stop, stand still and walk the other way.

We got the situation resolved; the city workers will no longer come unannounced to my house needless to say. In what could have been a very real home invasion situation Wolfgang and I worked as a team to handle a real life scenario.

Thanks Joe and Sidney, we were ‘keeping it real’ as you say and the outcome was a good one for all involved. I appreciate my dog’s abilities and am thankful for all the training. I’ll bet the city worker is, too!!!       –Gail
